Who is Darren Rowse?

Darren Rowse

Darren Rowse is a name that pops in my mind when I think about blogging. He is author of many successful blogs, but is best known by Problogger.net.

I stumbled upon Darren`s site a few years ago when researching blogs, but back then didn`t know how important this man is in blogosphere. Now I know and read Darren`s Blog every day. Darren – I`ll buy you a beer or two when I come to Australia.

Darren started his first blog in 2002 and started several blogs since then. After reading his story I found out similarities with other successful bloggers: the success did not come overnight, but rather with hard work, discipline and many failures. Darren is also often featured in the Press and is co-founder of a blog network called b5media.

How and how much does Darren make online?

Darren is author of several blogs and monetizes them with different methods. His main sources of income are AdSense, Chitika, Text-Link Ads, Amazon Associates, Private Ads and Affiliate programs.

He is definitely not bragging about his earnings, so it is quite hard to give exact numbers. You can check his blog, but you won`t find a total number. Darren`s House was built completely with money from blogging and that says enough for me. With so many blogs and income sources the number probably exceeds 6 figures per month.

What is Pay Per Click Marketing?

Pay Per Click Marketing is the fastest, most reliable technique to make money online. It uses pay per click advertising to drive interested visitors to your website or directly to the affiliate website.

What ingredients do I need to run a Pay Per Click Marketing Campaign?

1. A product to promote,
2. a list of relevant keywords,
3. ad copy (three line advertisements you see on google all the time),
4. a landing page,
5. an AdWords account,
6. an advertising budget.

While this looks easy, the actual process is a very time consuming process which involves several skills such as keyword research, customer research, competition research, preparing ad copy, preparing a landing page and so on. But the hard work is repaid multiple times. In case you didn`t know pay per click marketing is one of the top reasons why people quit their day jobs.

How do I make money with Pay Per Click marketing?

Lets say you are promoting a guitar training ebook worth $50 with the 50% commission. You will get $25 for each sale people make through your website. This is your profit.

On the other side there are expenses you need to pay to show your ads in Google. Since AdWords uses bid based CPC your cost per click will vary for different keywords. Lets say each click costs you$0.25 and you are averaging 100 clicks per day. This costs you $25.

Breaking Even

In our guitar training ebook example you need to sell 1 ebook ($25) to cover the 100 clicks you bought from Google at twenty-five cents each. This means your conversion is 1% and you are not making any money yet. It is a break even point.

Making Profit

Your goal is to increase the conversion rate and sell 2 products with 100 clicks. This would mean a profit of $25 for every 100 clicks and a 2% conversion rate.

How to get started?

There are countless websites, books, guides and programs that provide information about PPC Marketing. Many of them are free of charge, e-books usually cost $10-50 and there are membership programs that have a monthly fee.

As you probably know I joined Wealthy Affiliate on March 18th 2009. I want to be sincere with you. Today is April 17th 2009. I haven`t made any sale (yet). Why?

Because I learned the hard way that there is no way to succeed online in 15 minutes.

You need to learn things first. I have wasted a few hundred bucks in January and February because I didn`t know how to do proper research, landing page optimization and so on.

I am now learning each and every day inside Wealthy Affiliate and when I will be ready I will prepare my best campaign ever. Will let you know how I am doing:)

This is not one of my regular posts…and probably that’s why it is even more interesting.

When I was reading Jeremy`s post I remembered all these years I have been trying to make money online, trying everything that came along: pay to click, pay to surf, MLM schemes, I even remember beeing involved in a program called PIPS which was later found to be international multi-million dollar scam. I lost a few thousand bucks with it…

But you know what? I am still here. Still trying to make money online, still learning new things and I love it!

Even if it takes 500 more years I am going to apply new learned skills, improve my landing pages and raise the CTR until I get it right!

And one day I will succeed. (I know it. I just know it!)

My plans for week 5 (April 13-19) are:

• continue to learn Inside Wealthy Affiliate. I want to spend more time on forums and prepare my first campaign,
• explore Pay Per Click Advertising,
• continue to promote my blog and find new readers,
• find some advertisers for my blog,
• read blog archives of my idols.

My plans for week 4 were:

• learn inside the Wealthy Affiliate,
• explore article marketing,
• explore Pay Per Click marketing,
• promote my blog and get visitors,
• read blog archives of my idols.

Here is what I was doing from April 6-12:

• I am now on week 4 of Wealthy Affiliate action plan and I must say the program is amazing. I am learning so much every day and developing my first campaign. I want to make money really fast, but I have learned that research is very important so I spend most of my time researching keywords and niches.
• I am promoting my blog on Site point by adding useful replies and I am seeing some quality traffic coming in. Bounce rates are low, average time spent is more than 15 minutes. I am also commenting on Shoemoney’s and John Chow’s blogs and Tech crunch.
• I am impressed by Twitter and wrote a post with some tips and tools called Twitter World.
• Article Marketing seems like a very good free promotion technique for either direct selling or getting opt-ins. Find more about Article Marketing.
• John Chow is one of my Top IM idols and I found out more about him this week. Since Google has banned him from their index, it is quite hard to find things on his website. I created a post about John Chow with his blog earnings reports. He is making more than $40,000 per month from his blog alone!
• I did not manage to explore pay per click marketing this week, so I will do it next week.

TTZ Media is John`s main source of income. It is his own shopping network that serves ads on Technology related sites. I didn`t find exact numbers, but earnings should be way higher than his blog earnings.

Twitter is exploading the social media again and again. In just a few days after I have joined Twitter, there has been some fundamental changes in my working habits, marketing and my life in general. I can just say WOW!

What Twitter Tools am I using?

TwitterBar - Is a Firefox extension for quick tweeting!  I have Firefox opened all my day and it is so easy to post a twitt with this plugin. I just write something in adress bar and click on blue “t” icon. Love it!

Twitter Tools – Wordpress plugin that autoposts on twitter when I publish new post.

Thunderbird -This is another bird:). Not really a Twitter Tool but I use it to manage my email. Twitter Follow notifications are coming in all the time. So I created some smart filters to redirect messages from Twitter the way I want.

Find people you want to target and Follow them!

They will get notified and will check your tweet, bio, url. Make sure you have excellent tweeter page. Do it every day for an hour!

Method 2: Targeted Search

Find people by searching on search.twitter.com > my dog – targeting people who have dogs > translate this into your niche.

You can fasten your work with Firefox Plugin “Snap Links Plus” which helps you select multiple links at once.

Method 3: Mass Reciprocitation

Twitterholic.com is a list of top followed people on Twitter. This method is not for everyone – only for those who have very broad niche. It would be very hard to manually clicking all this people by hand so there is a tool that can help you with this.

It is called Hummingbird. It costs about $197 which is a lot. But if your Twitter campaign will pull more than that, it is a smart investment. Note: I haven`t tested this product, so try it on your own. Click here to view more details

What is article marketing?

Article Marketing = one of the best free methods of promoting anything on Internet. I will present how to do it the right way, what are the benefits and give you list of best article sites online.

How to do Article Marketing?

1. You need to write an article.  I created a nice checklist for writing and I read it often to refresh my memory.
2. You need to submit it to article website and put a link to whatever you want to promote in signature.
3. Wait to get listed in search engines and get traffic. In the meantime write more articles.

How to make money with article marketing?

The point of writing an article is not spamming readers with your affiliate links, but to give them a few valuable tips. Once they see you provide useful information, they will click a link on your signature. They will look for more information. That is the whole point of the article = to get people interested.

You can:

1. Direct link to whatever you want to sell.
2. Send readers to a squeeze page. (Get Opt-ins for later marketing )
3. Send them to a landing page where you promote your product.

From my experience squeeze page and landing page produce better results, but you can try direct linking and see if it works for you.

• get backlinks to your website,

Is article marketing for me?

Many people fail doing article marketing, because it is not easy. It is time consuming and involves consistent writing and sending articles, preparing landing pages and tracking results.

Writing just one article will rarely make you any money. You will need to set a goal and write at least 5 articles per week. At the end of the month you will have 20 articles and more chances to make money.

I was doing article marketing about two years ago and I still get some small traffic from article websites so I really suggest you do it to. It is free and you will learn a lot.

From now on, every post I create here on my blog automatically gets published on Twitter. This is a cool way to update my tweet and saves me some time.
